You can get whiplash from a sudden movement of the head in any direction from an accident that may involve a car, sport or other head injury. Sometimes the symptoms of whiplash can take several days to appear, therefore it is not always identifiable from the beginning.
A sudden jolt to the neck is a common cause of whiplash. As the head snaps forward and quickly backwards again, for example in a rapidly halting car, the delicate tendons and ligaments in the neck are stretched and suffer trauma.
Whiplash is commonly caused by careless driving, particularly when a vehicle is rear-ended by another as this causes the head to jolt forward rapidly. Around 17% of motor insurance claims involve whiplash injuries. Women in particular are more vulnerable to this type of injury, as it is believed their neck muscles are not as strong as men’s. Contact sports and extreme sports are also major causes of whiplash injuries. Boxing, rugby and martial arts frequently threaten sportsmen heavy blows to the head and falls which may knock the head. Horse riding also poses the potential danger of being thrown from the horse.
Temporary symptoms will manifest themselves 12 to 24 hours after the impact or blow. Stiffness, restricted movement of the neck, headaches, pins and needles, and pain to the neck, back and shoulder are typical symptoms that should alleviate quickly. It is only in extremely unusual cases where full movement will not be restored, with some people left suffering severe and long-lasting disability several months after the accident.
Symptoms usually disappear within days. According to the NHS (National Health Service), in approximately 60% of cases symptoms clear up completely within one to four weeks. Some people can still have symptoms several months after the injury occurred or suffer a severe and lasting disability, though this is uncommon.
Alleviating pain and stiffness is all that is usually required when treating whiplash. Patients can be prescribed Paracetamol and anti-inflammatory drugs. Once the pain has been treated, medical staff will pay attention to any damage that has been inflicted to the muscles, tendons and ligaments of the neck and back. Immobilization or the use of a neck collar is no longer advised. Instead patients should exercise the neck and keep active to support healing.
The most identifiable by product of whiplash is neck pain. This can start as late as 2 days after an accident, and can be of varying degrees of pain. Headaches are also reported, and they can be localized to one side of the head with one part being in pain, or all over with a general pain.
You may also have other symptoms. While the list is not all inclusive, these can be caused by whiplash. Nausea, dizziness, vision problems and shooting or burning pain in the back and shoulders can all be possible.
